  • Owl Call

By Joseph Sarosy| Juniper Heartwood@ I was walking at night, the twilight of early morning a companion to my thoughts, when blue is indistinguishable from gray. Until it isn’t. Soft transitions, in my mind and in the air, that lack the sudden clarity and color of daylight. From out of this soft darkness, across the valley, came a sound. Footsteps on dirt fill the silent air with the gravity of my own presence. So I stopped. Hoo. Hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo. The call came in rapid succession, overlapped by another huskier voice.

  • Nowhere Place

By Joseph Sarosy| Juniper Heartwood@ There is a place in the mountains near my home, close enough that I can get there regularly, far enough that it remains special. After a long and slanted dirt road, there is a gentle rise and a hilltop. From its vantage, one can look in every direction onto vistas unsullied by modernity. It’s not that modernity sullies or complicates the landscape. It’s that it orients me. Us. Towards places and times and patterns of remembrance.
