Biography

Londoner in São Paulo. Freelance Journalist. I mostly report on Brazilian and South American football for a variety of outlets, writing or talking about anything from the latest news or the best emerging players to the histories of small neighbourhood clubs. Exploring the social and political aspects of the beautiful game is what most captures my imagination, as the sport can so often provide a window into the culture and way of life of South American people. On occasion I write about social issues and political events in and of themselves and I am searching for opportunities to further my work in this area. My previous work includes radio reports for the [BBC World Service] (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p04yzrs5) as well as written pieces in English and Portuguese for various sites and mags including [The Set Pieces] (http://thesetpieces.com/interviews/mirandinha-interview-first-brazilian-play-england/), [These Football Times] (http://thesefootballtimes.co/2016/07/11/the-greatness-of-marta-in-a-still-sexist-game/), [Corner] (https://leiacorner.com.br/o-curioso-caso-de-matt-le-tissier/), [The Football Pink] (https://footballpink.net/2016/06/04/the-corinthian-spirit-democracy-dilma-and-dr-socrates/), [Box-to-Box Football] (http://boxtoboxfootball.uk/socrates-thats-footballers-name/), [Outside of the Boot] (http://outsideoftheboot.com/2017/02/05/copinha-2017-top-5-players-of-the-tournament/) and [Just Football] (http://www.just-football.com/2017/03/bruno-murder-girlfriend-dogs-brazilian-football-outrage/). I also run the Brazilian football site [O Canarinho] (https://ocanarinho.com/) and have a [personal blog.] (https://joshuamlaw.wordpress.com/) As for formal education, I studied Politics & the History and Philosophy of Science at the University of Leeds before completing a master's degree in Public Policy at University College London.

  • Remembering when Gazza faced Maradona... & upstaged Diego with a wondergoal

By Joshua Law, Nestor Watach| Planet Football Verified Paul Gascoigne and Diego Maradona shared something. They were both footballing royalty of course, two of the most wonderfully gifted players of the 1980s and 1990s. But it’s not that. It’s something deeper, more fundamental in their make-up. It’s a level of talent so great that it is seemingly unbearable. Genius, unmistakably, but a genius laden with flaws that were publicly displayed and made them excruciatingly human, that made them relatable and engaging and sometimes hard to watch.

  • Ronaldinho, Vieri, White....

By Joshua Law| Planet Football Verified For many of us die-hard football fans, it’s unthinkable to think some top-level professionals don’t live and breathe the game day in and day out. But footballers who just aren’t really fussed about football are more common than you might expect. For them, it’s just a job, and they switch off and think about other things in their downtime – which, to be fair, is probably quite healthy when you really think about it.
