Biography

I write about movies. More specifically, I like to write about digital filmmaking and special effects, philosophy and film, Turkish cinema, religious and spiritual film aesthetics, and Paul WS Anderson. I studied religion and strategic communication at Calvin University in Grand Rapids, MI. It was at Calvin, an alma mater I share with Paul Schrader, where I first developed my love for writing about movies. In 2022, I completed my Master of Theological Studies at Boston University. Given my academic interests, I accept pitches at the intersection of religion (of all sorts) and film.

  • Death Education

By Joshua Polanski, Burhan Qurbani, Petra Volpe| DMovies@ Death is an inevitable cinematic topic, perhaps even the topic of cinema. But for all of the trepidation in the face of fate, grim reapers, and on-screen demises, very seldom is the process of death – especially of the non-violent sort – considered a subject in its own right. Death instead intrudes on topics like revenge, war, and love as a plot resolution or obstacle to overcome.
