As one of the few older buildings still surviving on the block of W. Chestnut between Broad and Columbus Streets, it often catches my eye, and others have asked me about its history too. The office of Edward Jones is shown today at 130 W. Chestnut St.Henry Bell (1808-1863) came to Lancaster from Baltimore, married and had five children. He volunteered in 1861 to serve in the 17th Ohio Regiment.

Even after that date, many women were not able to vote because of some discriminatory state voting laws that remained. Let’s “meet” three Fairfield County women who were among “the first” to be able to vote and were willing and legally eligible to serve our community in different ways — just as well as men — in 1921, 1934, and 1949.
