Biography

I’m a journalist and researcher in criminal justice. I speak fluent Spanish, have lived in Mexico, and was a printmaker and graphic designer before becoming a writer and editor. I'm a co-founder and writer for Voices of Monterey Bay, www.vomb.org. I’m the author of “Blood In the Fields: Ten Years Inside California’s Nuestra Familia Gang,” a narrative nonfiction book about young people growing up within a sophisticated gang that preys on California’s agricultural communities, due out in Fall 2014 by Chicago Review Press. For 10 years I was a criminal justice reporter at The Monterey County Herald, where I focused on the California prison system, solutions to gang violence, and mental health issues in our jails, prisons, and courts. My writing and reporting have been published or broadcast by National Public Radio, PBS television, Discovery Channel, The Nation, Mother Jones, The San Francisco Chronicle, and many other outlets. I've recently worked as an adjunct professor and research fellow focusing on American gangs and responses to youth violence for the Center for Conflict Studies at the Monterey Institute of International Studies in Monterey, California. I was a class of 2011 Steinbeck Fellow at San José State University, specializing in creative nonfiction, and before that, a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, class of 2009. Before joining The Herald in 2004, I was a full-time justice reporter for the Center for Investigative Reporting in San Francisco, where my investigations earned national awards and led to the arrest of a prominent international arms smuggler. As editor of the national Latino magazine El Andar from 1998 to 2002, I helped the publication win 15 journalism and photography awards while the magazine published literary and journalistic works of up-and-coming talent alongside the renowned authors Carlos Fuentes, Gabriel García Márquez, Sandra Cisneros, and Ariel Dorfman. My reporting has earned top awards and honors from the California Newspaper Publishers Association, National Association of Hispanic Journalists, New American Media, the World Affairs Council, the Columbia Journalism Review and the National Council on Crime and Delinquency. In 2006, I wrote and co-produced the PBS documentary “Nuestra Familia, Our Family” about multi-generational gangs in a rural Latino community, which won Investigative Reporters and Editors’ highest honor, the Tom Renner Medal for Crime Reporting.
