  • Divide and conquer: genetics, mechanism, and evolution of the ferrous iron transporter Feo in Helicobacter pylori

By Stefan Schild, Franz G. Zingl, Karl Klose, Jennifer A. Gaddy| Frontiers@ 1. IntroductionIron acquisition is a major challenge for bacterial pathogens inside the host, and it is often a determining factor for infection and disease. Most of the iron in the host environment is tightly bound to proteins, hence not readily available for pathogens. Bacterial pathogens have evolved a diverse arsenal of systems for iron acquisition. This includes the secretion of siderophores, organic molecules that bind iron with high affinity.
