Biography
I am happiest writing and editing. The impending deadline eggs me on. I write a fair bit. For about six beginning 2016, I averaged 3 or 4 articles a month (usually 1000 to 1500 words long). This was along with a full-time day job in publishing where I am a commissioning editor. In 2023, I cut down on my article-writing to focus on writing my first book which came out in February 2024 and it was entitled '10 Indian Languages and How They Came to Be' (published by Duckbill, an imprint of Penguin Random House India). I like to look at things historically. And so most of my writing is bound to have a historical angle. I love literature -- the novel, short stories, poetry, drama. And I like to occasionally write about that. I am something of a language fiend. I am comfortable in six languages, read in four and am always curious about all things linguistic. I have specifically chosen to write about the social and cultural aspects of language. And this explains why my first book was on languages. In addition, the Indian state of Punjab is of special interest. I read and speak Punjabi well and I have written on certain aspects of the state as well as guest-edited an issue of an online journal on the state. I also have more than a passing interest in Bhagat Singh and have written several articles on his life and work. Another interest is Gandhiana. I have written about that too. I have also published academic articles on education in technical journals given my educational background in school education and my work in a leadership role in a school prior to my current work in publishing. As you may have guessed, I am a dabbler in many things. I think my writing and editing reflects that. I want it to, anyway.
