Biography
I am an award-winning journalist, editor and academic researcher. I hold a PhD in Gender and Cultural Studies, and am passionate about gender equity and social justice, particularly in sport. In 2019 I won the VicHealth award for Outstanding Reporting of Women's Sport, an award I was Highly Commended for in 2018. In 2019 I was also short-listed for a Quill Award for Excellence in coverage of Women in Sport, while my AFLW radio show, Kick Like A Girl (RRR), was shortlisted for Excellence in Sports Programming at the Community Broadcasting Association of Australia awards. As a freelance journalist, I'm a founding member of Siren: A Women in Sport collective, and continue to make regular appearances on ABC TV and radio among others. I have also worked as a media consultant, including for VicHealth where an external evaluation listed the value of my media strategy on the National Community Attitudes Towards Violence against Women Survey (NCAS) as $4.1M (a reach of 10 million people).

By Kate O'Halloran Verified| ABC News (Australia) Verified As the popularity of smartwatches, also called wearables, increases, so too does the amount of data users can access about their health. Statistics like resting heart rate, V02 max (maximal oxygen consumption) and heart rate variability (HRV) provide valuable insight into your fitness levels. But not all measurements are created equal. While HRV has long been used by elite athletes to dictate their training schedule, it has become a "buzzword" among the broader community.
By Kate O'Halloran Verified| ABC News (Australia) Verified As sisters growing up in south-western Sydney, Diane and Lorraine remember sitting on their dad's shoulders as he waded deep into the ocean. Mum — who couldn't swim — would watch on from the sand, minding one of their six siblings. "A few times, the waves were huge, and we got dumped, which terrified me," Diane, now 71, says.
