Biography

Katherine Ann Rowlands has worked as a journalist for 30 years, covering news in the Bay Area, Central California and overseas. As a 2017 JSK Journalism Fellow at Stanford University, she focused her research on how to overcome gender disparities in newsrooms, especially in leadership positions, and to bolster local news coverage in the Bay Area. In 2018, she acquired Bay City News, a local wire service covering the greater San Francisco Bay Area, and founded Bay City News Foundation, a nonprofit to support public service journalism. Check out the results at LocalNewsMatters.org, Previously, Rowlands was Editor in Chief of Diablo Magazine and an editor for the Mercury News and Bay Area News Group, directing coverage of business and technology in Silicon Valley. She also worked as East Bay Metro Editor and State and Regional Editor for the newspaper group. Before that, she was Business Editor for the San Luis Obispo Tribune. For several years, Rowlands also taught journalism courses such as writing, media law and public opinion at California State University, East Bay. She also wrote for the Economist Intelligence Unit, Newsweek Magazine, The Financial Times, The Honduras Letter, Honduras This Week, Escuela Agricola Panamericana (Zamorano University), and Moscow Magazine while based overseas in Honduras, the Netherlands and England. Rowlands is also a past president of Journalism and Women Symposium. A Berkeley native, she earned degrees from Macalester College and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, and studied at the London School of Economics.
