Biography
I am a freelance journalist based in New York reporting long-form feature stories about drugs, crime, counterculture, art, immigration, sports, and many other topics. I seek out compelling tales and believe that facts are infinitely stranger than fiction. My work has been published by The Atlantic, Grantland, Salon, The Stranger, and The Village Voice. I was formerly a reporter for Seattle Weekly and Riverfront Times. I was the recipient of the 2011 P.A.S.S. Award, given to stories that “illustrate current realities or the promise of reform, especially those that help people understand the complex causes of crime and what must be done to prevent and control it.” My writing was a distinguished submission in The Best Sports Writing of 2010 and featured in The Best Sex Writing of 2009, among other honors. A graduate of the journalism and comparative literature programs at the University of Washington in Seattle, I was raised in a small farming community in southwest Washington and currently reside in Manhattan with my wife Jenny and our frisky labradoodle Rufus.
