Biography

Kelechukwu Iruoma is a multi-award-winning journalist with an interest in investigative, development and solutions journalism. He has experience reporting global health, business, economy, human rights, climate change, politics, environment, aquaculture, conflict, oil and gas, and exposing corruption in the Nigerian public and private sectors. He has worked with over 100 editors producing compelling stories for publications such as Al Jazeera, Thomson Reuters Foundation, NPR, News Deeply, African Business Magazine, The Fish Site, TRT World, Devex, Recycling Magazine, Global Sisters Report, Premium Times, TheCable, Premium Times, International Center for Investigative Reporting (ICIR), among many others. He has been a reporting fellow of several media organizations, including the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), BudgIT/Civic Hive, and the African Resilience Network project of the Institute for War and Peace Reporting (IWPR). He has also worked with Non-governmental organizations such as the Foundation for Partnership Initiatives in the Nigeria Delta (PIND) as a media and communications consultant. Described by colleagues and editors as one of the most vibrant and energetic young journalists in Nigeria, Kelechukwu Iruoma has been honoured for excellence in journalism by several national, regional, and international organizations. In May 2021, he made the longlist in the Environmental Reporting category of the One World Media Awards. In March 2021, he emerged as the first runner-up for the online (English) category of the African Climate Change and Environmental Reporting Awards (ACCER) held in Ethiopia. In 2020, he won the overall prize of the Business and SMEs category for the West Africa Media Excellence Conference and Awards (WAMECA) in Ghana. In the same 2020, he was a finalist for the Excellence in Environmental Journalism Category for the Fetisov Journalism Awards, the most lucrative journalism award in history. In 2019, he was the overall winner for the Tax Reporting Category of the PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Media Excellence Awards. In 2019, He was the winner of the Microsoft and ICFJ Immersive Storytelling Grant worth $7,500. In 2018, he emerged as the third prize winner of the ICFJ story contest on migration and climate change. Kelechukwu is passionate about the development of Africa and has contributed immensely in using the media to influence change in Nigeria and beyond.
