Biography
I'm a communications professional with long experience in all sorts of media, thanks to a decade as communications director of a state agency and two decades as a reporter and editor for Connecticut newspapers. At the moment, I'm a freelance writer, editor, and webmaster. Publications carrying my writing include the news site CT News Junkie and the history magazine Connecticut Explored. Since 1999, I've been the owner/operator of HartfordHistory.net, a site dedicated to the history of Hartford, Conn. Since February 2023, I've written and distributed (through Constant Contact) a weekly newsletter connected to the site. From 2005 to 2016, I was communications director for the Connecticut Commission on Children, an agency of the Connecticut General Assembly. (It has since merged with several other legislative commissions to form the Commission on Women, Children and Seniors.) For the Commission, I wrote and edited content on a host of issues facing the state's children, from immunization to the achievement gap. This required writing for multiple audiences, including legislators, academics, and of course the general public. From 2001 to 2005, I was managing editor of HR.BLR.com and Compensation.BLR.com, subscription websites for human-resource professionals. Both were owned by Business & Legal Reports Inc., a compliance publisher based in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. From 1985 to 2001, I worked at the Journal Inquirer, a daily newspaper based in Manchester, Conn. I began as a town reporter and rose to state Capitol reporter. In 1992, I became an associate editor. In that job, I supervised six reporters, overseeing all aspects of their story production. I edited up to 10 stories per day, over three edition deadlines. This required fluency in Associated Press style--and nerves of steel.
