Biography
Senior Staff Reporter Kevin Meerschaert joined WJCT in February 2001. He previously worked at public radio stations in Salisbury, Maryland; Evansville, Indiana; and Ypsilanti, Michigan. Kevin is a graduate of Eastern Michigan University with a degree in Political Science and Communications. He has received numerous awards for his reporting skills including several from the Florida Associated Press. He was the recipient of the 2007-2008 Media Community Leadership award from Mental Health America of Northeast Florida. While covering everything from Jaguars home games to JaxChamber meetings, Kevin spends a lot of time at Jacksonville City Hall keeping tabs on the City Council and the Mayor’s office.

Ypsilanti’s current stabilization fund has about 51 days of general fund revenue on hand in case the city is hit by a sudden financial crisis. 2nd Ward Council Member Patrick McLean says he wants to establish a goal of 91 days instead. The Government Finance Officers Association recommends municipalities have at least two months of revenue set aside.

Funding comes from the bond issue voters approved in 2019. The groundbreaking for the new Mitchell Elementary was the first of several coming up in the next few weeks. The ceremony for the new Dicken Elementary School is slated for May 2nd. Mitchell will be the first of the new school construction projects.
