Biography

I've reported on social justice issues, the Catholic Church, women's issues, environmental issues, and business in the United States, Asia, and Europe. Business may seem like an odd add-on for someone who is clearly people- and issue-oriented, but in my experience most people in business also care about children, puppies, and the future. We can’t make the world a better place without business on board. What’s more, some of the best reporting over the past decade or so has been in the business pages. I’m based in Denver, Colorado, but frequently travel to the Pacific Northwest and beyond. My articles have appeared in US Catholic, Colorado Country Life, The Catholic Sentinel, Oregon Business, The Oregonian, Population Connection, Historical Novel Review and elsewhere. My awards include the Eileen Egan Award from Catholic Relief Services; two Edward O’Meara Awards from the U.S. Catholic Bishops for overseas reporting; several awards from the Society of Professional Journalists; and more than a dozen from the Catholic Press Association. Most recently I won the 2012 award for best feature article from the CPA for a story about the LGBT community and the Church. I’ve also done editing for magazines, newspapers, self-published authors, authors sending their work to traditional publishing houses, and even one New York Times bestselling historian. Although I have a solid background in history, political science and the environment, some of my most enjoyable recent assignments have just been fun pieces—about the Colorado Grand, for instance, which is a bunch of rich guys driving their million-dollar antique Bugatti roadsters across the Rockies every autumn. I’m currently working regularly for several editors, and also writing a nonfiction book titled The South Within Us, that project in conjunction with novelist Lee Patton. I like to think that I can be funny in addition to being good at interviews, getting the facts right, and writing about difficult and important subjects in an accessible manner. Give me a call at 303/758-9192 if you think I’d be a good fit for a project or article in your publication’s pages.
