Larry Madowo is an award-winning BBC correspondent, anchor, writer and speaker. He was named a Young Global Leader in 2020 by the World Economic Forum for his contributions to journalism. As BBC Africa Business Editor, he led the development and launch of 6 new business TV shows from the BBC in English, French and Swahili. He set up and managed a new BBC Africa Business unit with journalists spread across London, Nairobi, Dakar, Lagos and Johannesburg. Larry has been a journalist since he was 20, holding multimedia roles such as on-air correspondent, TV anchor, radio presenter and columnist. He was named among the 100 Most Influential Africans in 2018 by NewAfrican magazine. Larry has reported from over 40 countries and interviewed some of the world’s most prominent business, political and cultural leaders. Larry was a Contributing Columnist for the Washington Post’s Global Opinions page and has also written for the BBC and CNN. He previously worked in Nairobi, London and Johannesburg. He has been an outspoken defender of press freedom in his native Kenya, putting him at loggerheads with the government and his then employer. He is also a pioneering digital journalist with an audience of nearly 4 million followers on social media. Larry has a master’s in Journalism from Columbia University where he was a Knight-Bagehot Fellow in Economics and Business Journalism.
