Wang and world No 17 Duda shared the first four games before the German appeared to gain momentum in the fifth when he took a 7-3 lead at the Galaxy Convention Centre. But Wang, who won Olympic mixed doubles gold last year with Sun Yingsha, rallied to rescue the game, not dropping another point as he took it 11-7.

Earlier, men’s world No 2 Wang Chuqin recorded a more emphatic-looking winning scoreline in beating Aditya Sareen of Australia 4-0.
