  • UPC further expands judiciary with new judge at Paris central division

    By Laura King| Juve Patent@ In its recently published budget for 2025, the UPC set out its plan to hire more judges this year. In its latest move, the court has announced the appointment of a new judge at the central division Paris. A Dutch native, Marjolein Visser’s position as legally qualified judge at the UPC becomes effective at the court of first instance on 1 March 2025. This is following a decision by the Administrative Committee from 19 November 2024. Visser will take her oath on 4 March.

  • Changes at Regional Court Mannheim as judge Dirk Böttcher moves to UPC full time

    By Laura King| Juve Patent@ Thomas Schmidt has taken over as presiding judge of Civil Chamber 14 at Mannheim Regional Court. It is responsible for patent proceedings together with the 2nd Civil Chamber. The change had become necessary after the previous presiding judge Dirk Böttcher moved completely to the Unified Patent Court on 1 February. 220% UPC capacity in MannheimBöttcher had only taken over as presiding judge of the 14th Civil Chamber at the beginning of 2024. He was then appointed to the UPC in May of the same year.
