Biography
I write true stories that capture our changing relationship with water, for print and online including Hakai Magazine, The Walrus, The Globe & Mail, Smithsonian Magazine, San Diego Union Tribune and more. My first book The Imperiled Ocean: Human Stories from a Changing Sea is a collection of non-fiction essays about what people do on and in the ocean. Pegasus Books published The Imperiled Ocean in the US in November, 2019, and Goose Lane Editions published in Canada in February 2020. I live in San Diego, where I’m a member of the San Diego Science Writers Association and the Author’s Guild. I’m from Canada originally and I’ve lived in Toronto, Halifax, Vancouver, and Banff, as well as Edinburgh and Glasgow, Scotland. Beyond writing deeply reported literary journalism about the sea, I’m a big fan of penning personal essays, travelogues, profiles and opinion pieces about travel, technology, sustainability, and community.
