School friends Harry Shimmin, Katie Christian and Sarah Allen were on a 10 day hiking expedition when the avalanche hit at the summit of the Juku Pass. Harry had broken away from the guided tour to take photographs when he heard 'the sound of deep ice cracking behind him' and managed to find shelter behind a boulder.

Police say the cyclists were apprehended while the route was shut as emergency services dealt with an incident earlier today. The cyclists were riding in two separate pairs and stopped at the East Mountain Box. Police confirmed they've now been detained for contravening a closed road and contravening the one-way system on the A18.
