Biography
Leezel is a data-driven bridge journalist at the intersection of editorial, product, audience development, business development, marketing, and sales. She goes deep into a niche but can also see the whole picture from idea to product development to revenue opportunities to go to market execution. She is mission-driven to tell the best stories of our time. Names are important. If you’re wondering how to say her name, it’s pronounced LEE-ZEL (not Liesel from the “Sound of Music”). Currently, Leezel is the Senior Digital Director at the Dallas Morning News. Prior to this she was the Director of Audience Insights and Innovation at The Points Guy. She consults with media companies through her company, StatFury. In 2019, Leezel was selected for Reynolds Journalism Institute Non-residential Fellowship for 2019-2020 to build a tool that will help journalism. Prior to this, she worked with the Associated Press in Audience Development and was at CNNMoney (now CNNBusiness) as Assistant Managing Editor of Programming where she led a global team of multiplatform editors. She launched products like proprietary social metric SURGE. Leezel’s other stints include roles at HuffPost, CBSNews.com, VICE News, NowThis, ABCNews.com, KCBS/KCAL and The Press-Enterprise newspaper in Southern California. She received her Bachelor’s degree at Loyola Marymount University and a Masters degree at UCLA. She was part of the Poynter/ONA Women’s Leadership Program in 2016. She was named 2018 Member of Year by the Asian American Journalists Association after co-chairing AAJA-NY’s Trivia Bowl, a fundraiser that brings in $26,000 annually for scholarships. She is a 2019 Filipino Young Leaders Program (FYLPRO) delegate and is FYLPRO’s 2022-2023 President. She is the chair of the FYLPRO COVID19 Taskforce. She is the Project Director of Tayo, a virtual help desk for Filipinos during COVID19.
