After back-to-back years of unsuccessful outings in the annual Riley County Spelling Bee, she correctly spelled “spindle” Saturday to emerge victorious. “If I’m being honest, I really didn’t think I was going to be the winner because, well, the last two years haven’t really been very good,” said Sturges, a fifth grader at Theodore Roosevelt Elementary School in Manhattan.
