Biography

Hi! My name is Liam Smillie and I'm a freelance journalist. Since graduating with a first-class degree in June of 2021, I've been working freelance shifts with Deadline News and The Scotsman. I also work with The Guardian Foundation in a volunteering capacity, speaking to disadvantaged schoolchildren about journalism, sharing my experience in newswriting, and routes to working in news. While at university I co-founded a digital magazine called Tales from Lockdown, in order to chronicle the first few months of the COVID-19 lockdown in Europe and further afield. Editing the magazine also allowed us to gain work experience when all newsrooms were closed, as well as being an amazing networking experience with other young journalists. I'm interested in writing solutions-based journalism, having written my dissertation project on food insecurity in the UK. I hope to engage in further writing on the subject of poverty, class, and injustice in my career. Thanks for taking the time to read through my bio! Liam Smillie
