AASUA began the bargaining process on January 17, 2024 by sending the U of A a bargaining notice. Both parties are negotiating a renewed collective agreement. Because the U of A rejected AASUA’s proposals during negotiations, the university and union moved into informal mediation.

Nîpisîy House is a U of A residence apartment building. Matthew Naruzny, a fourth-year computer engineering student and resident in Nîpisîy House, said that after the fire alarms went off and residents evacuated the building, he heard people discussing how a fire happened on the fifth floor.
