Whether writing breaking news or features, I pride myself on bringing compassion and context to the stories I tell. My top-performing stories rarely come from press releases, press conferences, government meetings, or court cases – although I can cover all of those things. From breaking the story about B.C.'s deadliest COVID-19 outbreak, to writing a viral story about a Vancouver realtor who picked a property clean of fruit during an open house, to searching out examples of people trying to bring joy and comfort to one another during crises – I find and tell stories that centre people, not events. I try to amplify the voices of marginalized people whose stories have long been dismissed and overlooked. After spending nearly a decade answering a rape crisis line, I got into journalism because I was inspired by the power and potential for reporting to effect change. Ajesh Jacob was sentenced last month in Victoria and the judge’s decision was published online Wednesday. At trial, Jacob was found guilty of committing five assaults between May of 2019 and March of 2021 when he worked at Big Feet Reflexology and Acupressure. “The impact was clear when (the victims) testified,” Justice Catherine Murray wrote in her decision.

A “female youth” was in Downes Bowl Park between 10 and 11:45 p.m. when an “unknown male” sexually assaulted her, the Abbotsford Police Department said in a media release Tuesday. The suspect is described as between 15 and 20 years old, with dark skin, dark brown hair in a “bowl-cut” and a short beard.

Video posted to social media – punctuated by shocked commentary from the people filming the altercation – shows roughly two and a half minutes of the fight between two groups of golfers. It starts with shoving, club-pointing and exchanges of profanity.
