Biography

As the Executive Director of Global Information Network (GIN), a nonprofit media company, I write and distribute Africa News in Brief, a weekly selection of major news developments for U.S. minority media readers of the Amsterdam News, Frost Illustrated, Carolina Peacemaker, Seattle Medium, Wilmington Journal), and for wire services InDepthNews.net, and TriceEdneyWire.com. I edit Africa Renewal (U.N. pub) following a stint at the U.N. office of Inter Press Service (IPS), a prize-winning developing world news service. My career in journalism was launched in Hudson County, NJ, where I was a general assignment reporter at the Jersey Journal responsible for coverage of the burgeoning Latino community being displaced by gentrification. From there, I took up an assignment with the Teamsters Union, Local 560, Union City, NJ, to start up a serious labor newspaper with coverage of the government-run trusteeship that addressed organized crime in the union's largest local. The paper was named the 560 Free Press. After several stints with labor publications, I began to curate news from Africa for the African-American media, leading to the launch of an African media center where I organized with African journalists an Africa Roundtable series - a public event with invited guests from the continent on current affairs. This developed into a collaboration with Sahara Reporters, a highly regarded Nigerian anti-corruption online news site. In addition to text for print media, I created an Africa radio feed for the Columbia University WKCR Africa Show which continues today. Prior to Africa, my focus was on human rights in Guatemala for which I created the Update on Guatemala on the extensive human rights violations in that country.
