Biography
I'm a member of the editorial board at Bloomberg View, which I joined in early 2012. Before that I was at the Wall Street Journal for 12 years, in London covering European politics, diplomacy and security; then in Brussels as deputy bureau chief for the Brussels and Germany bureaus, editing the reporters and writing about Eastern Europe; and then as bureau chief in Istanbul in 2011/12. Before joining the Journal I spent two years in London at the Financial Times as European News Editor. Prior to that I had spent just under 7 years in Moscow, much of it at The Moscow Times, where I was editor-in-chief. I started out in journalism in the Washington bureau of the U.K.'s then newly-founded The Independent, where I was very much the junior reporter of three. From there I went in early 1990 to Bucharest for The Independent, covering post-Communist Romania and Bulgaria, and once the war started in 1991, to ex-Yugoslavia. I covered the war in Croatia, but moved to Moscow with The Independent in early 1992, before moving to The Moscow Times, to help start it up as a daily newspaper.
