Biography
I’ve written professionally for more than 20 years. I started my career writing obituaries for The Journal-News in Westchester County, N.Y. I moved from New York to the D.C. area to work as a reporter and editor for Inside Washington Publishers and served as the editor of the clean-air industry newsletter AirDaily. I freelanced for What’s Up Annapolis and Bay Weekly while living in Maryland and working as a full-time federal technical writer. I moved to Seattle, where I freelanced for The Costco Connection, ParentMap, Bellevue Downtown and Latitudes and Attitudes. As a toddler mom, I wrote the Sandwich Generation blog Hereditary Insanity and later Fisher Family Foodies. Find me at: @mbfisher1000words on Facebook and @mbfisher1000words on Instagram.

Have you seen a dorsal fin slice the surface of the Chesapeake Bay and wondered if you need a bigger boat? Just because you’re not in the ocean doesn’t mean you’re not in shark territory—specifically the sandbar shark, bull shark, sand tiger shark, smooth dogfish, and spiny dogfish. Those are the most common sharks in the Bay, according to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF).
By Maria Fisher| SpinSheet Magazine Verified Rave reviews for the Chesapeake Beach Railway TrailAn Occupational Hazard brought my husband and me to the Chesapeake Bay. She was a red and white 15-foot bow rider, docked in Mayo, MD. We took her out on the water and fell in love. We bought a house in Shady Side, a block from the water, with a wet slip as part of the deal. Although our commute to Washington, DC, was hell, we lived the good life in that house for two years before my husband got transferred to Seattle, WA.
