Merce Cunningham was an American choreographer at the forefront of American modern dance for more than 50 years and two of his works are performed on this occasion, Beach Birds and BIPED. Much is demanded of the dancers of the Lyon’s Opera Ballet in both these pieces as classical dance movements are extended into poses requiring enormous strength and precision.
By Marian Kennedy| London Theatre 1@ Twice-Born by Scottish Ballet at Sadler’s Wells is a mixed bill of three different works. It opens with a short film, Dive, which won the Jury Prize for Best Film at Cinedans Festival 2022. It starts as a beautifully meditative, classical piece focusing on a solo dancer against a white background. However, disruption is introduced to both tone of dance which becomes contemporary and music as an ensemble of dancers is interspersed.
