Culture Journalist, Freelance

New York

Biography

I’m a senior culture reporter at HuffPost, where I primarily cover film and television, examining their intersection with politics, race and gender. One throughline in a lot of my work: I'm particularly interested in how culture reflects questions of power. In a past life, I was a breaking news and national politics reporter, which included managing much of HuffPost's evening and weekend coverage of the 2016 election. I've been a fellow at the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center's National Critics Institute, a leading program for arts and culture writers, and the Poynter Institute's Power of Diverse Voices writing program. I frequently mentor young journalists and advocate for racial and gender equity in the journalism industry. I've been a mentor for Girls Write Now, a creative writing mentoring program for female and gender non-conforming teens in New York City. I'm a member of the Writers Guild of America, East (where I've served on the bargaining committee for two of HuffPost's union contracts and sometimes guest-host the WGA East's "On Writing" podcast), the Asian American Journalists Association, and the Television Critics Association. I live in Brooklyn, NY, after growing up in Pittsburgh and graduating with honors from the University of Chicago. I spent most of my college life in the newsroom of The Chicago Maroon.
