Mark LaVenia is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Canterbury’s Child Well-being Research Institute, where he serves as National Assessment Coordinator for the Better Start Literacy Approach and leads professional learning initiatives in structured literacy. Mark earned his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy from Florida State University and has been recognised through selective research fellowships and advanced training programmes, including the Strategic Data Project Fellowship at the Center for Education Policy Research at Harvard University, his role as a LASER Scholar in Learning Analytics, and an Institute of Education Sciences Predoctoral Interdisciplinary Research Training Fellowship at the Florida Center for Reading Research. His scholarly contributions span experimental research design, statistical analysis, and the development and evaluation of educational assessments, addressing topics such as mathematics education, teacher beliefs, and curriculum policy. Beyond academia, Mark is an accomplished bassist, performing in progressive jazz-rock and metal ensembles.
