Mark Shuman is a freelance writer from the Chicago area and an English instructor and writing coach at McHenry County College. Shuman has written articles on a wide range of topics for local and national outlets including TIME magazine, the Chicago Tribune, and USA Today. Shuman's love of travel began as a six-year-old when his family took a first trip in an RV from Chicago to Mexico. He wrote his first travel article at age 16 for the Chicago Sun-Times after completing RAGBRAI, a bike trip across Iowa. His love of travel--and travel writing--increased during college international studies semesters in Scandinavia and Spain. After graduation. Shuman worked at the legendary journalism training ground, the City News Bureau of Chicago, before landing an academic fellowship, which allowed him to complete an M.A. in English at the University of Western Australia through the Rotary Foundation. Since then, he's been an enthusiastic news, features, and travel writer, with a particular interest in Spain and Latin America. Shuman is a proficient but not-quite-fluent Spanish speaker with an interest in family travel, tennis, skiing and the outdoors. Employed as a college instructor and writing coach, he and his wife Ann, raised two college-aged boys in Crystal Lake, Illinois. Shuman also sidelights as a private writing tutor working with students on writing projects that include research papers graduate theses.
