Biography
Making the case for things he believes in and collaborating with others is Marvin’s surest path to doing whole-hearted work that drives uncommon results. He is at his best when he’s developing creative solutions and shaping public opinion by using the full suite of modern tools – media relations, public speaking, writing, podcasting, event development, branding and grassroots advocacy. Marvin has worked at all points along the nonprofit spectrum from small to large. He co-founded two grassroots nonprofits – Coliseum Coalition and Friends of the Fairgrounds – and serves as spokesman for the wider movement to reactivate the Mid-South Coliseum and make the city’s Fairgrounds all it can be. In his 13 years at Church Health, Marvin built the organization’s reputation as one of Memphis’ most vital causes through effective use of the media, and by founding and growing the organization’s signature Rock for Love concert fundraiser as a way for musicians and music fans to give back. Marvin also led the rebrand of Church Health – producing a new name, logo, color palette and tag line – in a way that took best advantage of the move to Crosstown Concourse, one of Memphis’ most transformative adaptive reuse projects. Marvin’s current work at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital has allowed him to use a more complete set of communications tools and expand his repertoire to include national and international media relations work. Marvin hosts a podcast called Champions of the Lost Causes and is writing a narrative nonfiction book of the same name. Stemming from his years of Coliseum advocacy work, the book explores what drives people to champion multifaceted civic causes and what makes them successful. He is serializing the book’s content on his blog, championsofthelostcauses.org. Marvin has a B.A. in Journalism from the University of Memphis, is a past board member and director of the Public Relations Society of America (PRSA), Memphis chapter. He has also served on several nonprofit boards and committees, advised many nonprofits on their communications strategies, and taught a Publicity 101 class through the University of Memphis and Momentum Nonprofit Partners.
