Biography

Mary Yang is a reporter at Foreign Policy with a focus on Southeast Asia, Asia, and island nations. She is also a writer for The Yappie, a publication on Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) politics and activism, where she leads the newsletter—a bi-weekly round-up of the issues most relevant to members of the AAPI community. Mary has also reported on Capitol Hill as a congressional reporter for Medill News Service. There, she covered affordable housing and transportation policy, but also investigated a diverse set of stories—such as Hmong farmers in Wisconsin left out of pandemic relief, international sanctions on cryptocurrency, and the impact of Covid-19 on the U.S. meatpacking industry. Mary also covered Virginia's 2021 gubernatorial election, with a focus on voters of color, and scored a profile on the Republican candidate, a political newcomer, for mayor of Alexandria, Va. Before finding her groove covering politics from the local to the international level, Mary reported on small businesses and entrepreneurship as an intern at Inc. Magazine. There, she landed interviews with executives in the media, beauty and wellness industries, and her piece on Chicago's oldest LGBTQ neighborhood—Boystown—was published on the front page of the Chicago Tribune's Business section. Mary is young and hungry, and she believes, so deeply, in the power of the pen and paper—to deliver real change. She's the proud daughter of Chinese immigrants, a half-marathoner perpetually in-training to run a full one, and she knows far too much about the latest happenings in the world of reality TV.
