They are odd plants that grow on stilts and weep salt from their leaves. But they anchor the entire marine community. Their roots create nurseries for fish, their limbs create nesting areas for sea birds and their forest protect the shoreline from storms. The idea of anchoring a community has a strong appeal to me. The mantle of "expert" or "guru" never felt comfortable to me.
