Biography

As a staff reporter for The Boston Globe’s Your Campus and Your Town sections on Boston.com, I cover 15 area campuses, four of the city’s busiest neighborhoods and MBTA news, regularly breaking stories and writing in-depth features on an array of topics. Over the past four years, I’ve led major citywide projects for the sites and taken on numerous beats. I’ve also worked a weekend reporting shift at the Globe’s Metro Desk covering general assignment and breaking news, including several front page stories about complex topics, often under tight deadlines. The summer after I graduated from college, I was an editorial intern at The Christian Science Monitor writing distinct stories on major national issues – including multiple, in-depth pieces on the Gulf oil spill – and assisting with research for the weekly print cover page feature. The bulk of my work has been covering news in and around my home state – from Boston to western Massachusetts. Working at the Globe West bureau as a co-op for six months during college, I covered a wide range of news – from breaking crime, court and late-night election reports to lengthy, detailed features – and was frequently commended for my aggressive work ethic in digging to find and report on unique, local stories. Midway through the co-op, my editors asked me to be the correspondent for a new hyperlocal site covering Framingham, one of New England’s largest towns. During my final college semester, as managing editor of The Massachusetts Daily Collegian, I was integral in daily print, web and multimedia production. In this role I worked closely on special investigative projects and series, fostered partnerships with other media entities and launched a business news section and a smart phone application. While working as a Collegian editor and juggling a full course load during one semester as a junior, I interned in Northampton at The Daily Hampshire Gazette’s sports and news desks. Between my academic and journalistic work that semester, I earned two scholarships. Over the summer of 2008, I wrote for The Sun Chronicle in Attleboro where my news writing began. At times following my internships, I freelanced for the Globe, Gazette and Sun Chronicle. Along with completing the journalism major at UMass Amherst in the spring of 2010, I received a bachelor of business administration degree in marketing from the Isenberg School of Management. My website, MattRocheleau.com, is designed to show my experience as a journalist.
