By Matt Stell| KAMC-TV (Lubbock, TX) Verified LUBBOCK, Texas — Near the corner of 23rd Street and Cedar Avenue in East Lubbock, the Chatman Hospital has stood tall for 80 years. Now known as the Chatman Community Health Center (part of The Community Health Center of Lubbock), the Chatman Hospital was established by the late Dr. J. A. Chatman in 1945 to serve the Black community in Lubbock during the Jim Crow period of segregation.

Lusk Jr., a San Angelo native, began boot making at the age of 12. During the Great Depression, Lusk Jr. moved to Lubbock to work at Brown’s Boot and Saddle Shop. Within a few years, Lusk Jr. had become the shop’s foreman, a rare promotion for an African-American at the time.
