  • A simple gift becomes a memorial

By Melanie Threlkeld McConnell Verified| The Mountaineer Verified On the south side of my house in a spot that was chosen as more of a place holder than a forever spot, grows a tree I planted 21 years ago. It wasn’t a sapling I stuck in the ground way back then, but a jagged edge little branch, maybe 6-8 inches long, taken from a beautiful old cork screw willow that generously shaded the yard of a lovely little home on a dead end street near the railroad tracks in south Waynesville. The place was beautiful: peaceful, lush with foliage and bright with flowers.
