  • We’re Sex Workers and We’re Proud – The Independent

By Justin Brake Verified, John's Status, Sarah Swain Verified, Melissa E. Wong| The Independent NL Verified As sex workers, we are proud of our history of activism, and the community that sex workers have built here in our province and across so-called Canada. Each year on September 14 we observe International Sex Worker Pride Day. We stop and celebrate who we are and the work we do. In all likelihood, the day passed without you even noticing. But for us, it is essential that we take time to acknowledge and appreciate the important work we do.

  • A Bookseller's Dream - The Independent

By Mark Hoffe, Wendy Rose, Sarah Swain Verified, Melissa E. Wong| The Independent NL Verified It’s another rain-soaked, dreary spring day as we wait for a line of light traffic to swish along Duckworth Street in downtown St. John’s. Across the street, a few pedestrians trudge along a jellybean row that hosts a slew of local small businesses. A few doors from Posie Row on our left and Fred’s Records on our right is Elaine’s Books, the last bookstore standing on a stretch that not too long ago boasted three beloved spots for a book hunt. We dart across the street and duck inside.

  • Both Sides Now - The Independent

By Melissa E. Wong, Newfoundland Quarterly, Elizabeth Whitten, Sarah Swain Verified| The Independent NL Verified “What do you think this winter will be like?” I asked my mother absently as we wandered through the grassy labyrinth of our backyard this past fall. I was trying to make conversation so I did what anyone might do: I reached for the weather. “What do I think this winter will be like?” She echoed. Winter was on my mind. Although it was a warm evening, I could already feel the tell-tale chill of winter in the air. The leaves were slowly turning red after a warm summer.
