Sports Writer, LNP

Biography

I'm coming up on 40 years as a sportswriter, all in Pennsylvania, with the Lebanon Daily News, Harrisburg Patriot-News (PennLive.com), and since late 1997 with Lancaster Newspapers/LNP Media Group. I also co-host a podcast, "After the Buzzer,'' (https://admin5.podbean.com/afterbuzz/episodes/list) with Gordie Jones. In 2013 I published a book. "Best Game Ever,'' (https://www.amazon.com/Best-Game-Ever-Mike-Gross/dp/0615891012/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Best+Game+Ever+Mike+Gross&qid=1646699358&sr=8-1) which is, as the title suggests, about the best game I've ever seen. I've hosted a talk radio show, done game color commentary on radio, and freelanced for a variety of publications. I'm a member of the FWAA and a Heisman Trophy voter, and I coordinate the nominations and voting for all-state high school boys' basketball in Pa. Awards: 11 Keystones, which are given by the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association, the first for a game story on the 1983 World Series, and a couple AP Managing Editors' awards. In addition to the '83 World Series, I've covered two Rose Bowls, the Orange, Cotton and Fiesta Bowls, the Big Ten championship game, dozens of NCAA basketball tournament games, golf majors including eight U.S. Opens and numerous state and regional high school championships. I've written a column, at least weekly, for most of the past 35 years. For the past 17 years my main focus has been Penn State football, a huge deal in our part of the world. That included the Sandusky scandal, which for a time was perhaps the biggest news story in the world.

  • Gratitude for a long, fruitful career [column]

By Mike Gross Verified| Mahoning Matters Verified Along, long, long, long time ago, I realized - and realized is a more accurate word than decided - I was going to be a sportswriter. As it all winds down and I consider the contents of This Space one last time, the word that keeps floating up is gratitude. To borrow from San Francisco columnist Jon Carroll, consider this a grat etude. I have written, by my very rough estimate, more than 8 million published words.

  • As NFL draft looms, Penn State star Abdul Carter visits Ephrata card show

By Mike Gross Verified| LNP Verified Does it matter that Abdul Carter was three hours late for an appearance in Ephrata Saturday? Certainly not to NFL teams who are expected to make Carter, a Penn State all-American defensive end, a top-five pick in next month’s NFL draft. It went over less well with organizers of the Ephrata Lions Club, who hired Carter to sign autographs at their 45th annual annual card show.

  • Philla Catholic league members Father Judge, West Catholic win state basketball titles

By Mike Gross Verified| Mahoning Matters Verified HERSHEY - After decades in the second division of the Philadelphia Catholic League, Father Judge rose to the pinnacle Saturday, defeating Roman Catholic 71-60 for the Class 6A state boys' basketball championship at the Giant Center. Judge also beat Roman for the PCL title three weeks ago, and edged the Cahillites in the regular season. The Crusaders (24-7) got 29 points from senior guard Kevair Kennedy, who made 15 of 17 free throws. Junior slasher Derrick Morton-Rivera scored 19.
