Biography

I have worked for The Associated Press on a full-time basis since September 1997, starting out as an editorial assistant in the Washington, D.C., bureau before transferring to the Detroit bureau in January 1999. Since that time, I have worked as the Michigan AP's day and night editor, its interim news editor and as a general assignment reporter. These days, I am a "video first" journalist at the AP, which means I primarily shoot and edit my own video pieces for online and broadcast use and am a general assignment text reporter. I also write the occasional national book review. I started at the AP as a weekend editorial assistant in 1996 while a graduate student at the University of Maryland. I earned a master's in journalism from Maryland in 1997 and spent that summer interning at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution before joining the AP on a full-time basis in the fall. I earned a bachelor's degree in political science in 1995 from The College of Wooster (Ohio), where I worked for three years as a sports editor at the campus newspaper. I grew up in the Pittsburgh area and graduated from Beaver (Pa.) High School in 1991.

  • After breaking fast, volunteers use Ramadan as an opportunity to give in Detroit

By Mike Householder Verified| Philadelphia Tribune Verified DEARBORN, Mich. — After a nightly iftar meal with family members breaking fast together during Ramadan, Nadine Daoud noticed full pots and trays of untouched leftover food lining the shelves of her grandmother’s refrigerator. Too often, she felt the food was quickly forgotten and then wasted. The observations inspired her 2017 creation of The Helping Handzzz Foundation that brings volunteers together each year during the Islamic holy month.
