By Mike Probst Verified| southtexasnews.com@ The Rockport City Council, at its regular meeting Tuesday, Sept. 10, unanimously approved the second and final reading of Ordinance 1946 creating a Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone (TIRZ) for the prime area of downtown Rockport, including the Rockport harborfront property that has been fenced off for more than 30 years. Andrew Kane, who posted a petition/poll on social media, said, “Social media blew up this past weekend,” adding that 82% of those answering the poll opposed the TIRZ.

A public hearing regarding the 2024-25 budget was also held, followed by the budget’s passage on a single required reading. The new tax rate is $0.405294, effectively a 14.57% increase in the rate.
