Company Info

Mmegi

Dikgang Publishing Company (DPC), the proprietors of Mmegi and the Monitor was established in 1992. The new company took Mmegi over from Mmegi Publishing Trust, but the trust remains a major shareholder in the newspaper. Mmegi wa Dikgang/The Reporter first appeared in its present in 1984. From its humble beginnings, Mmegi has grown exponentially over the years. From a staff complement of just under 10 people in 1984, it now boasts a staff of over 200 people. In 2003, Mmegi became a daily, the only private newspaper to do so in Botswana, except for a brief period in 1987 when the Botswana Gazette did so. The newspaper is now firmly established as a daily, providing an alternative to the government-owned Daily News. Going daily has entrenched Mmegi's dominance on the local media landscape, and it continues to be the preferred newspaper for both readers and advertisers. At the turn of the century, the Dikgang Publishing Company introduced a new product, the Monitor, which became an instant hit with readers and advertisers. The Monitor targeted women and the youth without alienating the traditional readership base of the older newspaper, which has become the flagship of the DPC stable. The Monitor comes out every Monday. It carries fresh news of events that take place over the weekend, not least sports, which is very popular with readers all round.
