My Journey as a Freelance Journalist, Feature Writer, and Author My name is Muha Obaidullah As Sahal, and I was born on October 1, 2001, in Kurigram, Bangladesh. From an early age, I was fascinated by stories, the written word, and the power of communication. Little did I know that this curiosity would later shape my career as a freelance journalist, feature writer, and author. Growing up in a small town like Kurigram, I found myself drawn to the world beyond what I could see. Reading newspapers, watching documentaries, and following national and international news all sparked an interest in me. By the time I was in high school, I began to realize that I didn’t just want to consume stories—I wanted to tell them. Early Days of Writing I started writing at a young age, contributing my first few articles as a student. These early works were simple but earnest attempts to capture the world around me. What began as a hobby soon became a passion, and I started looking for platforms to share my voice. My initial articles were featured in local and smaller publications, but I kept pushing myself to reach more readers. With time, my writing evolved. I began focusing on issues that mattered to me, including social justice, culture, and human stories that often go unnoticed. Writing was not just a form of expression for me—it became a means of connecting with people, highlighting their struggles and successes, and giving a voice to those who are often unheard. Breaking into Mainstream Media As I honed my skills, I began contributing to mainstream Bangladeshi media. I am fortunate to have written for Shomoyer Alo, Daily Nayadiganta, Kalerkantho, Jagonews24, and several other respected outlets in Bangladesh. Each of these opportunities allowed me to explore different aspects of journalism, from investigative pieces to human interest stories and cultural features. The diversity of the topics I cover has always been one of my strengths. I write about everything from the political landscape to the everyday lives of ordinary citizens. Each article is a new learning experience, allowing me to dig deeper into the world around me. A Lifelong Passion for Journalism Being a freelance journalist comes with its own set of challenges. There is no steady paycheck, and the work is often unpredictable. But the freedom it offers is unparalleled. I have the ability to choose my topics, follow stories that I find compelling, and work with a wide range of publications. Freelance journalism has also taught me discipline and perseverance. The ability to meet deadlines, constantly pitch new ideas, and continue producing content regardless of setbacks has been key to my growth. Despite the challenges, I am grateful for the opportunity to make a living doing what I love. Becoming an Author In 2022, I took a major step in my writing career with the publication of my first book, "Amio Roja Rakhbo". Published by Tarunya, this book is a deeply personal project that reflects my thoughts, observations, and experiences. Writing a book is a very different process from writing articles. It requires patience, focus, and a long-term vision. The satisfaction of seeing my words in print, bound in a book, was unlike anything I had experienced before. The book was well-received, and it opened up new avenues for me as a writer. I started connecting with readers in a more intimate way. Unlike articles, where the connection is often fleeting, a book allows readers to engage with your ideas over an extended period. This deeper relationship with my audience has been one of the most rewarding parts of becoming an author. Exploring Filmmaking In addition to writing, I have always had a passion for visual storytelling. As a short filmmaker, I find filmmaking to be an extension of my writing. Through film, I can bring my stories to life in a way that words alone cannot. The transition from writing to filmmaking has been a natural progression, allowing me to experiment with different forms of storytelling. Short films offer a unique challenge—they require precision, clarity, and creativity, often within a few minutes of screen time. Just like in my writing, I aim to explore human emotions, societal issues, and untold stories in my films. It’s a creative outlet that complements my work as a writer, and I look forward to continuing my journey in this field. Looking Ahead Looking back, I am proud of the path I’ve taken as a freelance journalist, feature writer, author, and filmmaker. But there is still so much more I want to achieve. I plan to continue writing for major publications, working on new books, and expanding my horizons in filmmaking. My journey so far has taught me that stories are everywhere—you just need to look. Whether through writing or film, I will keep telling the stories that matter to me, those that inspire, inform, and provoke thought.
