Biography

A writer, policy advocate and educator, my work has appeared in the popular press including The Nation, The American Prospect, The Week Magazine, New York Daily News, AlterNet, Dissent, Jacobin, Huffington Post, In These Times, Dollars and Sense, Technology Review, and The Progressive Populist as well as in peer-reviewed journals such as the Harvard Journal on Regulation, Employee Rights and Employment Policy Journal, William Mitchell Law Review, Univ. of Cincinnati Law Review, Drake Law Review Perspectives on Work: The Magazine of the Industrial Relations Research Association and WorkingUSA: The Journal of Labor and Society, My expertise in public policy has been cited globally in the New York Times, The Economist, The Times of London, Los Angeles Times, Time Magazine, USA Today, C-SPAN, NPR and a host of other outlets. My organizing, writing and advocacy has involved a wide range of progressive organizational partners, including international and local unions, think tanks, and grassroots organizing groups. I have decades of experiences as a public policy professional, including as Policy Director and then Executive Director at the Progressive States Network where I oversaw a staff of fourteen and a network of 1000 state legislators working on a range of policy issues from state budget management to labor policy to health care to criminal justice reform to the environment, as well as work as Associate Counsel at the Brennan Center on anti-poverty and democracy work and as Program Director at NetAction challenging Microsoft's emerging monopoly in the late 1990s. My experience includes successful social entrepreneurial skills in building and expanding multiple non-profit institutions where I personally raised millions of dollars from foundations and individual donors. I am an experienced higher education professor. I currently teach regularly (in-person and online) at Lehman College, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, American University, and University of Oklahoma. I've also taught in the past at Walden, Park University, the University of Arizona Brooklyn College, MCNY, Bard College, and Rutgers. I hold a Juris Doctor from Yale Law School and a PhD in Sociology from UC-Berkeley. My main areas of expertise include labor rights, tax and budget policy, voting and government reform, technology and telecommunications, immigration, health care, the environment and urban policy.
