Biography

Born in Boston, I have lived in New York City off and on since high school. As a sportswriter I had a therapy session with Mike Tyson's hypnotist and broke my arm profiling pro arm wrestlers for the Village Voice; I have written Op-Eds for both the NY Times and Wall Street Journal, was an editor and staff writer at American Heritage for five years, and am the author of a book about the true criminal story that inspired Elia Kazan's masterpiece, On the Waterfront, DARK HARBOR: The War for the New York Waterfront (FSG, 2010). For the New York Times, in 2009 I profiled a group of New York painters who had known the KGB spy Rudolf Abel during his tenure posing as an artist in Brooklyn Heights in the 1950s. When my FIA request declassified hundreds of pages of Abel's FBI interrogation sessions, I published an ebook about his career in America, drawing on these many unseen documents, THE AMATEUR: Artists & Spies in Cold War Brooklyn (iTunes Store, 2014; Kindle Amazon version, 2016). In 2015, I published THE LOST DETECTIVE: Becoming Dashiell Hammett (Bloomsbury), about the youth and Pinkerton career of our greatest crime writer. It has been well reviewed by the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, O Magazine, and was nominated for an Edgar Award as well as the Bouchercon Anthony Award. My latest book, SON OF THE OLD WEST: The Odyssey of Charlie Siringo, was published by Grove Atlantic in Sept. 2023.It won the Will Rogers Medallion award. (Now in paperback).
