  • Eat the Content: Celebrating Bidoun Magazine

In the arts specifically, media coverage of the region was always quite superficial. I was interested in building bridges between cities like Cairo and Beirut, and working with the communities of writers and artists who lived there. Initially, Bidoun grew out of conversations between myself and my closest friend, Sunny Rahbar.

Bidoun

Since 2004, Bidoun has filled a gaping hole in the arts and culture coverage of the Middle East, pioneering a distinctive voice that is intelligent, critical, and original. From the beginning, Bidoun has served as a platform — for new questions, images, and ideas about the Middle East. Bidoun's activities fall in three primary areas: publishing, educational, and curatorial. To date, our projects have included a range of pursuits: curatorial initiatives, educational programs, artist commissions, talks, tours, performances, books, an itinerant library, and an online archive of avant-garde media. Bidoun magazine has won some of the most sought-after honors in the publishing world, including a nomination for a National Magazine Award for General Excellence in 2009, and three UTNE Independent Press Awards for social and cultural coverage, design, and art writing. Bidoun has been written about in Artforum, British Vogue, Newsweek, The New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Sueddeutsche Zeitung, and made an appearance on Topic A With Tina Brown, among many other venues. Our contributors include avant-garde artists, gallerists, writers, activists, and entrepreneurs from across the globe, as well as pop stars (like Maya Arulpragasam aka MIA), art stars (like Walid Raad, Lawrence Weiner, and Tony Shafrazi), and even a Nobel Prize laureate (Orhan Pamuk). Bidoun Projects is a registered 501©(3) non-profit organization.
