Nia is a highly accomplished professional, holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism/Magazine Article Writing from Columbia College Chicago. In 2017, she furthered her academic pursuits by completing a Master of Jurisprudence in Intellectual Property at The John Marshall Law School, now part of the University of Chicago in Illinois Law School. Since October 2010, Nia has been the driving force behind Jones Publishing & Enterprise, LLC., where she serves as Publisher, Writer, and Speaker. Concurrently, her role as a Senior Communications Coordinator at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine, Buehler Center for Health Policy & Economics, began in February 2019, following a position transfer from Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital. Her journey in the realm of communications started earlier, with significant roles at Columbia College Chicago’s ColumbiaLinks as a Journalism Mentor and the American Medical Association, where she supported Governance and Risk Management staff from August 2008 to October 2010, and managed Content Management Systems and Records at the Journal of the American Medical Association from July 2007 to March 2008. Beyond her professional roles, Nia is deeply passionate about the intersection of journalism and education. Recognizing the pivotal role community colleges play in shaping local journalism. Her commitment stems from the recent implementation of the new media literacy law in Illinois, and she envisions community colleges as the cornerstone for fostering responsible journalism and informed citizenry. In her current position at the university, Nia has played a vital role in shaping policies related to violent and overdose death reporting. Her expertise has not only influenced legislation but has also facilitated collaborations with non-profit organizations seeking grants. She has successfully translated complex data into compelling narratives, contributing to public awareness and engagement. Mentoring students on their journalistic journey is a personal passion, reflecting her dedication to the growth of responsible journalism.
