  • Two councillors standing for mayor in Lower Hutt

By Nick James Verified| Radio New Zealand (RNZ) Verified Lower Hutt is set to get a new mayor following this year's local body election, with two councillors throwing their hats in the ring for the role. Last week Campbell Barry, who has held the mayoralty for two terms, announced he would not be seeking re-election. That decision meant there was no incumbent for the job at a time of major change for the city with work on Riverlink, the Petone to Grenada Link Road and the Wellington to Lower Hutt pathway and sea wall Te Ara Tupua underway.

  • Urgent sewer repair on State Highway 2 in Lower Hutt causes major traffic disruption

By Nick James Verified| New Zealand Herald Verified It stated that if the pipe failed, it could cause large volumes of sewage to flow into the Hutt River for “extended periods” and trigger the collapse of a section of State Highway 2 that sits above the pipeline. Work to fix the pipe, which is set to cost $5.2 million, started on Thursday night and is expected to be complete in two weeks. During the works, two northbound lanes on State Highway 2 towards Lower Hutt and Upper Hutt will be open and one southbound lane towards Wellington City.
