Biography
I was raised in Park Slope, Brooklyn at the height of its transformation from crack haven to yuppie heaven. My earliest political education involved my journalist father schooling me on the nuances of the Dinkins and Giuliani administrations en route to P.S. 321. I attended Temple University in Philadelphia, where I briefly flirted with becoming an actor before settling on an English major. My first foray into journalism was an internship for the local Philly news blog, Phawker.com, where I wrote about everything from racist poll workers during the 2008 Democratic primary to phony Philadelphia tour guides. After graduating, I freelanced for the Philadelphia Inquirer and Philadelphia Weekly, the latter of which I wrote a cover story exposing the deceitful debt settlement industry and their predatory practices on low-income Philadelphians. I have an insatiable appetite for traveling, having spent a semester abroad in Florence Italy and backpacking through Europe. I took a sabbatical from journalism to drive cross-country through the south and southwest, followed by a five-month journey through Southeast Asia, Sri Lanka, and India, where my taste for spicy food and passion for hiking were fully realized. Upon returning to Brooklyn, I continued to freelance for the Greenpoint Gazette, Brooklyn Paper, and New York Press, before landing a full-time gig at City & State, where I had several works published during the summer of 2012. I am a passionate fan of “the unholy trifecta” of New York sports teams—Mets, Jets, and Knicks—and I spend most of my free time reading sports sections and agonizing after every inevitably disappointing season. I currently live in Ditmas Park, Brooklyn.

On May 18, 2018, while on duty as a Santa Fe ISD police officer at the local high school, a shotgun blast from a student shooter ripped a hole through Barnes’ forearm and severed his brachial artery. Eleven surgeries later, he only has partial use of his arm.
