Biography
Nicole got her B.A. in English Literature before writing and teaching English in Prague, San Francisco, Buenos Aires, and Paris. She eventually landed in NYC where she received a Master’s Degree in International Affairs from Columbia University. Nicole has worked as a freelance writer for many years and in 2017 she took over as editor and publisher of Washington, D.C.'s online arts publication DC Theater Arts. Nicole continues to write for a variety of publications. She was a 2019 National Critics Institute Fellow at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center and a 2022 Entrepreneurial Journalism Fellow at CUNY's Newmark Journalism School. Nicole lives in Maryland, near Washington, D.C., with her three daughters, two rabbits, and one very patient husband. The “second-act slump” is a common phenomenon in plays: An author nails the first act, building the action to a cliff-hanging crescendo heading into intermission and then loses momentum in Act II. Not so with Sleepova, now playing at Olney Theatre Center. In fact, Sleepova may be the first play I’ve ever seen with a “first-act slump,” if we can, um, make that a thing.

But even those with the most rudimentary knowledge of Shakespeare’s masterpiece will appreciate Playwright Lauren M. Gunderson’s latest girl-power drama, A Room in the Castle, a re-examination of Hamlet that puts the women front and center.

We are working with our community to find a way for the site to continue past that date. Nicole Hertvik was DC Theater Arts’ second publisher/editor-in-chief, having assumed the role in 2017 following the death of founder Joel Markowitz.
